Triple Whale is the attribution tool of choice for Shopify and DTC brands. It puts a first-party pixel on your store, pulls in Shopify order data, and runs multi-touch attribution across your marketing channels. If you're spending $50K-$500K/month on ads, you've probably evaluated it.

How Triple Whale Works

Triple Whale installs a JavaScript pixel on your Shopify store. When a visitor arrives, the pixel captures the traffic source (from UTM parameters), tracks on-site behavior, and matches it against real Shopify orders.

Their attribution model distributes credit across touchpoints — first click, last click, linear, or their proprietary "Total Impact Model." They claim to be within 10-15% accuracy compared to actual performance.

Where Triple Whale Falls Short

UTM dependency. Triple Whale reads UTM parameters to identify traffic sources. UTMs are plain-text strings that anyone can forge, overwrite, or misformat. If a browser extension replaces the UTM at checkout, Triple Whale attributes the sale to the wrong source.

Pixel blockability. The first-party pixel is JavaScript running on your site. Ad blockers can block it. Consent banners can prevent it from loading. In privacy-conscious markets, significant traffic goes unmeasured.

Model opacity. Their "Total Impact Model" and "10-15% accuracy" claim are based on their own methodology. The advertiser trusts Triple Whale's algorithm to correctly assign credit. There's no way to independently verify that the model is right.

Platform data dependency. While Triple Whale collects first-party data from your pixel, it still ingests platform-reported metrics (ad spend, impressions, clicks) from Meta, Google, TikTok, and others. The inputs to the model include self-reported data from the platforms being measured.

No forgery protection. Triple Whale can tell you "this conversion came from utm_source=facebook." It cannot tell you whether that UTM was legitimately placed by your Facebook campaign or injected by a third party.

How Croupier Differs

Croupier replaces the UTM with a signed token. Instead of a plain-text label that any script can write, the advertiser issues a cryptographically signed coupon that only they can create.

When to Use Which

Triple Whale is good at: Multi-channel dashboard, marketing mix visibility, Shopify-native integration, understanding the customer journey across touchpoints. If you want a unified view of your marketing spend and approximate attribution across all channels, Triple Whale does this well.

Croupier is good at: Proving which specific publisher or channel drove a conversion with cryptographic certainty. If you need to know that Publisher A converts at 8% and Publisher B converts at 0.1%, and you need that number to be un-fakeable, Croupier provides the proof.

If Triple Whale says Facebook drove 200 conversions and Croupier's coupons verify 195, your model is accurate. If Triple Whale says 200 and Croupier verifies 80, the gap is the inflation you're paying for.

The coupon doesn't need to understand the customer journey. It just needs to arrive at the conversion endpoint with a valid signature. That single fact — "this conversion was reached through this channel" — is the ground truth that all modeling should be calibrated against.
